      Jasper Rides for MiMo

Friend of MiMo, Jasper Scarratt, went for a gentle bike ride through Flanders to raise money to buy bikes for MiMo’s kids and staff. Completing 229 kms Jasper raised US $1,685 which means we can buy at least 12 bikes through local Maputo company Mozambikes. Well done Jasper, a great achievement and thanks to all of his friends and colleagues for their generous sponsorship!

        Easter Egg Raffle for MiMo

Friends of MiMo placed 5 Easter Eggs in 5 different locations and raised over £550 for MiMo’s kids. Tickets were bought for a chance to win an Egg in time for Easter Sunday. A huge thank you to Peter for providing the eggs, to Judy, Lisa, Miranda, Amanda, Sedge, Joe & Amanda’s Mum for selling the tickets and to everyone who contributed.

          Mozambikes for MiMo

Derbyshire based pilot, Jasper Scarratt, is soon to be swapping his jet engines for pedal power when he undertakes to complete the arduous We Ride Flanders event which follows the route of the Ronde Van Vlaanderen Cyclo Sportive in Belgium.

Keen cyclist Jasper is riding to raise money to provide bicycles for staff and children at the Mission Mozambique (MiMo) charity project in Katembe, Mozambique. MiMo is operated and financed by Derbyshire based charity The Mission Mozambique Trust and currently supports a home for orphaned and vulnerable children whose lives have been decimated by HIV/AIDs.

MiMo’s project is located in a rural and remote area where children have to walk several miles each day to attend school and staff have to walk to work. By providing bicycles the journeys to and from school and work will be much easier and less time consuming.

Jasper, who is employed by TAG Aviation and flies executive jets all over the world said, ‘As I was entering this event it seemed a good opportunity to link my passion for cycling with such a good cause. Transport is a huge challenge for the children and staff at MiMo and this is just one way of helping. I hope lots of my friends and colleagues will support me by sponsoring my attempt to complete the course’.

The event, which takes place on Saturday 31 March 2018 preceding the professionals ride on Sunday, starts from Antwerp and travels 229 km through Flanders to Oudenaarde.

            Casa 3 opens

Thanks to the generous support of Make my Day Better our third house is now habitable. 14 new arrivals aged between 2 and 12 years and their House Mother have recently moved in – they are slowly settling in to their new surroundings with the help of the other children.

            Spoons takes up residence

Another welcome arrival, this time of the furry variety, has joined the MiMo family. Found abandoned in May, Spoons was introduced to the children and is now treated as part of the family in Casa 2. Two of our boys have willingly taken up the important responsibility of caring for Spoons who is now living a very comfortable life in his forever home.

            Lili joins the MiMo Team

Welcome to Lili Gervaśio – our newly appointed Project Care Supervisor who joined the MiMo Team on Monday 17 July. Lili, who is a qualified paediatrics nurse, will be focussing on the day to day care and health of our resident children.

Casa 3 ready for a new family

Repairs to, and refurbishment of, the third house are almost finished with just a coat of paint needed to smarten the exterior. Over the next two weeks 12 more children will be joining us and together with their new House Mother, Claudia, they will form a family unit and live in this house. We all look forward to welcoming them.

New General Manager for our project at the Casas de Esperanca

We are delighted to welcome the arrival of the new General Manager for our project at the Casas de Esperanca in Catembe.

Anabela Felipe has a management background in human resources, finance and company administration and is keen to progress the development of our project. We have no doubt that she will be a great asset and we all look forward to working with her.

Art lessons to the children with Osvaldo

Local Katembe artist, Osvaldo, who has been giving art lessons to the children is delighted with their progress. Together they have created the two pieces of artwork shown.

Painting and drawing gives each child another opportunity to express themselves and Osvaldo can now recognise whichpiece of work belongs to which child. Further projects are being worked on – if you would like to purchase any of the pictures you see please contact us.

Osvaldo also exhibits his work at the Catembe Gallery Hotel and is featured in various exhibitions in Maputo.

                Make My Day Better

Make My Day Better, the charity arm of UK companies Dial A Flight and the Lotus Group, have recently made a generous donation to MiMo. This support will enable MiMo to renovate two more houses at the Casas de Esperanca which, when completed, will give an additional 24 vulnerable and orphaned children a home.

A huge thank you to Make My Day Better from everyone at MiMo.

School material donation from a Formiguinha

The students of the 4th Grade at primary school “a Formiguinha” in Sintra, Portugal have been learning about solidarity and volunteering.

Celeste & Wannes, Directors of MiMo who live in Sintra, were invited to speak about their experience at the Casas de Esperanca and about the project Associacao Missao Mocambique.

The children were very enthusiastic and caring and they spontaneously decided to collect school materials for the children at the Casas de Esperanca.

A big thank you to the students for their initiative to help other children!

                  Green Rhino Travel

A huge thanks to Janet and her team from Green Rhino for supporting MiMo in 2016.

During the year Janet came across from South Africa and organised 3 fundraising events in Maputo which raised over 10,000 US $. The last event being in November where a record amount was raised – this enabled us to provide a great Christmas for all of the children who, for the first time, were able to stay together for the whole Christmas period. We are indebted to Janet and her team and the Managers and staff at the Southern Sun and Cardoso hotels for giving their time and support to benefit MiMo’s children.

Visit by the new Governor of Maputo

Tuesday 21st February the MiMo team hosted a visit to the Casas de Esperanca by the new Governor of Maputo, Yolanda Cintura. The Governor met the children and viewed an exhibition of their paintings and crafts.

The boys enjoyed a full day out at the Natural History Museum followed by lunch and a visit to the Fort in Maputo. The visit proved to be very successful with several of the boys acting as guides around the exhibits.

                          Update January 2016

An intense period of maintenance is underway with the first house now fully functioning having been plastered, painted & re-glazed with new electrics, new plumbing and a new cooker. Work has nearly been completed on the second house so House Mothers and children are feeling much more positive as they can see a secure future.

                            Website update in progress

We are busy updating the MiMo website.

                            We apologize for the inconvenience.

                            Caring to make a difference

Through no fault of their own these children find themselves orphaned and homeless, not even daring to dream that their lives could change for the better.
